Logo Design and Business Cards
I have grouped these two section just because usually with a new logo design comes new business cards. I also offer free business card layout with the purchase of a logo. I understand that a logo represents your company and needs to be something that not only conveys what you do, but also symbolizes the character of the company. Whether it be fun, clean, professional, fast, etc.
I have a few techniques that I have learned to make a successful logo over the years. First, I always create the initial design and ensure that it looks good and is readable before the introduction of color. This ensures that your logo will reproduce well in things like copy machines and newspapers. Second, while finalizing a design, I include a scale of sizes, from large to small, to make sure that at least the company name is legible at the smaller sizes. There are always exceptions where a logo may only be used for one purpose, like a web site, but you never know where it might end up. So, better safe than sorry.
The Logo Design Process
When creating the initial concepts, I like to brainstorm with the client to try to capture the look and feel of exactly what they are looking for. Then I will work on my own to come up with a set of roughly sketched ideas to pick from. Once a concept is chosen, I will usually provide a few variations on that theme in a more finished sketch. At that point, we will pick the winner and create the final vectorized version. There is usually then one more round of tweaks to the final design. Again, all logos are different, and some are harder than others and require more rounds of tweaks and changes, but ideally that would be the process. The Kid A logo design was unique in that he ended up choosing two fairly different logos. They had a similar look and feel, and used a simple, hand drawn look, while still being vector.
Vector Illustrations
Vector is simply a term for a type of file that is scalable or resizable. It also give the best quality print and clearest text. With a few exceptions, it is almost always better to have your logo in a vector format. It can be used anywhere regular pictures and text can be, and be sized however it is needed without loosing any quality or detail. File types that can be used for vector include Adobe Illustrator (AI), PDF, EPS, and Windows Meta File (WMF).
