3D Modeling
This category contains some of the different 3D models I have created. I have worked in both Lightwave and 3D Studio Max, but 3DS is more of the industry standard so that is what most of my work is now done in.

This little animation was just a piece of a much larger project, but I thought it was interesting enough to have its own little article. It was created entirely in 3D using regular polygon type modeling as well as the six separate particle systems seen spraying from the nozzle in the drill bit. A gravity effect was used to get the particle systems to curve back upwards (another great thing about 3d modeling - gravity can go any way you want it to!).
This piece was later composited with Photoshop layers using After Effects to create a finished drilling animation (not seen here).
Multiple particle systems with the amount and velocity of the particles required to create this effect meant that even my fastest computer spent a good amount of time creating the final rendering for this animation.
The size of this completed project, needing delivery in an uncompressed production quality, actually required buying a large, inexpensive external hard drive and shipping it to the client with the files on it.
Final adjustments and additions were made to small parts of the project through the use of my FTP, which helps with the transfer of large files.
This is another example of a project completed entirely off-site, through email and phone.
Pricing was done on an hourly basis, as per the clients request. However I can also work on a fixed budget basis, agreeing on the final price in advance, or a combination of the two.

These 3D model animations started with just an idea that I then sketched up on paper to make sure I was headed in the right direction. Once the sketches were approved, they I translated the designs into 3D and then animated them. These animations were used in conjunction with some drawings to both secure patents and help communicate the ideas to potential investors. This project only required the use of my 3D modeling software, other than being encoded and compressed for emailing.
The entirety of the project was complete via email and phone for a client on the other side of the United States. This saves both parties time and money, requiring no travel expenses while still allowing clients the opportunity to select from an infinite number of different designers.

This is a desk I am currently in the process of designing. I am trying to create something to hold all of my computer equipment. Standard desks just aren't designed to handle 4 screens, an over sized computer tower, and a drawing tablet. I have created the model and room to scale to test various designs and also be able to get a sense of space that it is hard to get just doing sketches. One decision this will help me make, is whether or not to tear out the closet door frame for that extra foot of space. |
